What is a Legislative Committee?
Legislative committees are small groups of representives from the Senate and House of Delegates that are the initial filter for bills. There are thousands of bills introduced in each short 90-day legislative session and committees allow bills to be quickly evaluated by representatives knowledgeable about bills in a specific area (Finance, Education, Judicial)
Legislative committees are the first barrier to a bill becoming a law.
Bills related to civil law suits must be passed in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee and House of Delegates Judiciary Committee.

Members of committees are very powerful. If any of your representatives are members of the committee, it would be extremely helpful to call and/or email them. But any Maryland resident can contact members of the committees. See tips on communicating with your representative.
